Multiflight provides helicopter for children’s hospice Christmas surprise

Multiflight has helped make it a Christmas to remember for children and their families at Martin House Children’s Hospice in Boston Spa by providing a helicopter to fly Santa in with presents.

Multiflight and Leeds Bradford International Airport have joined forces again this year to provide a helicopter and presents for a special treat for the children and their families.

Multiflight provided a Dauphin helicopter from its fleet of charter helicopters for the special Christmas flight to the hospice on the morning of Wednesday December 22nd. Leeds Bradford International Airport provided the presents for the children at the hospice and their siblings.

“It’s great to be able to help give the children, their families and the staff at the hospice a special Christmas treat and Multiflight is delighted to be able to do this,” said Linda Nicholls, Multiflight’s Charter Manager.

Tony Hallwood, Leeds Bradford International Airport Commercial Director, said: “We wanted to make sure that the children at Martin House Hospice have a wonderful Christmas with lots of presents, Christmas fun and of course an extra special visit from Santa. It's a really memorable and heartwarming trip for all those involved.”

Sheila O’Leary, Head of Care at Martin House Children’s Hospice, said: “Santa arriving in his helicopter is one of the most magical visits to Martin House. The children and adults will be excited from the moment they get up. Mid morning we will all gather in the garden and listen for the gentle hum of the helicopter engine. The children will squeal with delight as the helicopter is spied in the sky.”

Sheila adds: “Some of the children are too poorly or find it difficult to see Santa in his grotto and it is lovely to be able to bring Santa to them and for them to experience this memorable event. We want to say a big thank you to everyone involved.”

Martin House Children’s Hospice provides care for children and young people with progressive life limiting illnesses and provides support to their families and the hospice does everything it can to help create special memories for them. A visit to the hospice by Santa in a helicopter is a wonderful and special event for the children and their families and a memory they can treasure.

The hospice needs to raise £4.2 million annually to run the service it provides at its purpose built hospice in Boston Spa, Wetherby, and care for children and young people from throughout the Yorkshire region. The aim of Martin House is to provide family led care for children with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses. It is a place where children, young people and their families can stay from time to time along their journey and find support, rest and practical help.

Great North Air Ambulance Service launches second Dauphin helicopter bought from Multiflight

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) has launched the second of two Dauphin Eurocopter AS 365 N2 helicopters it has bought from Multiflight.

Both of the Dauphin helicopters will be managed and crewed by Multiflight. The first Dauphin bought from Multiflight was launched into service by GNAAS earlier this year.

Multiflight Managing Director Steve Borrowdale said: “Multiflight is delighted to be the company chosen to help and support GNAAS with buying two helicopters, as well as the management and crewing of both aircraft.

“The two new helicopters will be a great asset to the valuable service that the charity provides.”

GNAAS unveiled the newest addition to its growing fleet this week. The Dauphin helicopter replaces the old ‘Pride of Cumbria’. The lease of this helicopter expired at the beginning of the month. For the first time in the charity’s history it has decided to purchase its own helicopters rather than leasing them, which in the long term will be more cost-efficient.

This new generation helicopter may look similar to the last, but it has upgraded engines allowing for greater speed and endurance - reaching speeds up to 200 miles per hour. To put that into perspective it can fly from Whitehaven to Newcastle in 28 minutes and Penrith to Carlisle in 5 minutes. It has also been kitted out with the latest medical equipment and has been described as a flying A&E unit.

GNAAS Chief Executive Grahame Pickering said:

"This will be the third helicopter we have dedicated to Cumbria as part of ongoing improvements and commitment GNAAS has to the region.”

He added: “We are very grateful to Multiflight for supporting the charity through the difficult process of purchasing two helicopters. The charity believes that buying its own aircraft, rather than leasing as it has done in the past, will be more cost-effective in the long term.”

Multiflight teenage student pilot flies solo before he can drive a car

After getting a flying lesson at Mutiflight from his parents as a 16th birthday present there has been no stopping teenager Jonny Lee.

Jonny, of Eldwick, near Bingley, flew solo before he could drive a car and gained his Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL) two months before his 18th birthday.

Jonny has done all his flight training at the Multiflight Flight Training Centre at Leeds Bradford International Airport. He sat seven written exams and completed the course in a Robin HR200 light aircraft to gain his PPL.

He now aims to become a long-haul commercial airline pilot and will start his commercial flight training at Multiflight and Bristol Ground School next year.

Jonny says he likes the freedom of being up in the air and found his driving test harder than becoming a pilot.

“Flying is a great feeling and Multiflight offers excellent instructors and is a fun place to learn to fly,” he says.

A former Woodhouse Grove pupil, Jonny left school at 16 to pursue his ambition of becoming a commercial airline pilot. He got a job at La Stazione in Ilkley to fund his flying lessons.

He has completed cross-country flights to Durham and Humberside.

“My friends just don’t believe me when I tell them about my flying,” says Jonny.

10 years at Multiflight for YAA

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA), celebrating the 10th anniversary of its first ever flight on October 25th, has had a base at Multiflight at Leeds Bradford Airport since it started operating in 2000.

Since launching, YAA has flown well over 3,000 patients directly to hospital for treatment. Every day of the year at least one person will fly as a patient in a YAA helicopter.

The YAA is an independent charity providing a life-saving rapid response emergency service to five million people across Yorkshire. It operates seven days a week, 365 days a year, covering a vast landscape that not only includes major cities and motorways, but also rural and isolated locations.

To keep providing this life-saving service the charity needs to raise £7,200 per day to keep both of Yorkshire's air ambulances maintained and in the air.

Both of Yorkshire's air ambulances are MD902 Explorers and have state-of-the-art medical and helicopter specification. The first air ambulance, based at Multiflight, is known as G-SASH and the second air ambulance, based at Sheffield Business Park, is known as G-CEMS. The YAA now also have a third satellite base at Bagby Airfield in North Yorkshire. Both helicopters can reach speeds of up to 160 mph.

A Great North Run by Multiflight’s Charter Manager raises money for children’s hospice

Multiflight’s Charter Manager Linda Nicholls has raised over £400 for Martin House Children’s Hospice in Boston Spa by completing the Great North Run.

Linda crossed the finishing line of the half-marathon in two hours, 26 minutes and 30 seconds and was delighted to be able to complete the course for the hospice. She visited the hospice and met with children and their families there last Christmas when Multiflight helped make it a Christmas to remember by providing a helicopter to fly Santa in with presents.

“The hospice does such good work providing care for children and young people with progressive life limiting illnesses and provides invaluable support to their families and I wanted to do something to help,” says Linda.

“When we visited with the helicopter last year it was so apparent what a brilliant place Martin House is and they need to raise millions of pounds each year to run the service it provides.”

Up until running the Great North Run the furthest Linda had run was 5k. She said she didn’t find the longer distance too bad though and would consider doing another half-marathon in the future.

To find out more about Martin House Children’s Hospice and the service it provides, or to make a donation, visit www.martinhouse.org.uk.
