Multiflight teenage student pilot flies solo before he can drive a car
After getting a flying lesson at Mutiflight from his parents as a 16th birthday present there has been no stopping teenager Jonny Lee.
Jonny, of Eldwick, near Bingley, flew solo before he could drive a car and gained his Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL) two months before his 18th birthday.
Jonny has done all his flight training at the Multiflight Flight Training Centre at Leeds Bradford International Airport. He sat seven written exams and completed the course in a Robin HR200 light aircraft to gain his PPL.
He now aims to become a long-haul commercial airline pilot and will start his commercial flight training at Multiflight and Bristol Ground School next year.
Jonny says he likes the freedom of being up in the air and found his driving test harder than becoming a pilot.
“Flying is a great feeling and Multiflight offers excellent instructors and is a fun place to learn to fly,” he says.
A former Woodhouse Grove pupil, Jonny left school at 16 to pursue his ambition of becoming a commercial airline pilot. He got a job at La Stazione in Ilkley to fund his flying lessons.
He has completed cross-country flights to Durham and Humberside.
“My friends just don’t believe me when I tell them about my flying,” says Jonny.

A Dauphin N2 helicopter supplied to the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) charity by Multiflight has been launched in Newcastle.
The helicopter, the first of two Dauphin N2 helicopters that Multiflight has supplied to the charity, flew in over the Tyne and landed on Gateshead’s Quayside for the launch event. Representatives from GNAAS, Multiflight and the media were among those present to greet the helicopter as it landed.
Grahame Pickering, Chief Executive of GNAAS, shakes hands with Steve Borrowdale, Multiflight’s Managing Director.
The new life-saving aircraft, which is painted in its official GNAAS livery and is kitted out with state-of-the-art life-saving equipment, will be known as the ‘Guardian of the North’.
The Eurocopter AS 365N2 Dauphin helicopter belonged to Multiflight’s fleet of charter helicopters. The company, which specialises in buying and selling aircraft, maintained and operated the Dauphin for a private individual under its Air Operators Certificate.
