Here at the Multiflight Flight Training Centre at Leeds Bradford International Airport we are often asked questions by people both interested in learning to fly and by flying students.
To help answer some of the more frequently asked questions we have compiled a list here of questions and answers that refer to both fixed wing and rotary flight.
If your question is not answered here, or you would like further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Do I need any previous experience or qualifications?
No, you need no previous experience before starting your flying course.
What types of courses are there available?
There are currently 2 different licences that you can obtain through us, the Joint Aviation Authority (JAA) Private Pilot's Licence (PPL) and the National Private Pilot's Licence (NPPL). The JAA PPL is a common European licence that allows the holder to fly single engine aircraft during the day in good weather conditions and is a minimum 45 hours course. Once you hold a JAA PPL you can then undertake extra courses to fly multi-engine aircraft, fly at night and in bad weather. The NPPL is a 32 hours minimum course and only entitles the holder to fly single engine aircraft with maximum of 4 seats during the day in good weather and only in UK airspace. You cannot add on any other courses to the NPPL licence. The 2 licences also have different medical requirements; the JAA PPL requires the more stringent JAA Class 2 medical and the NPPL requires a medical declaration, issued by your GP. It may be that you might have a medical condition that might preclude you from holding a Class 2 medical but may be no problem with the NPPL medical.
Will I automatically get my licence after 32 or 45 hours flying training?
No, 45 hours is the minimum requirement as laid down by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for a person to hold a JAA PPL and 32 hours for the NPPL. It can sometimes take people a few more hours to meet the standard required by your examiner: the national average is 55 hours. It is not in the interest of safety for a flying school to guarantee a student a pass in a certain amount of hours. At Multiflight we treat safety with paramount importance and therefore our students will only take a test when their flying is up to a suitably high standard.
Do I have to take a trial lesson first?
No you don't have to, but we recommend that you have a trail lesson first to make sure that you are comfortable with the sensation of flying a light aircraft. The time you are in the aircraft can be counted towards the hours for the licence.
How long does the course take?
Once you have passed your first ground exam you will need to complete the other six exams within 18 months, then once all the exams are passed you have a further two years to finish the course and get your PPL issued. We can tailor courses from a full time (3-4 days a week) to a more part time schedule to suit you over a couple of years if required. However, please bear in mind people tend to suffer from lack of continuity if they try to spread the course out over a long period.
How old do I have to be?
The minimum age requirement for a holder of a PPL is 17; however you can fly solo at the age of 16. Although technically you can start PPL training at the age of 14 we recommend that you do not start until you are nearly 16 as you may be at solo standard but not able to go due to your age.
Do I automatically get a licence when I have completed the course?
No, just as when you learn to drive you will take theory and practical test. There are 7 ground exams that you will need to take, a practical radio phraseology exam and a final flight test with an examiner. You can purchase all of the textbooks for the exams from us and can take the exams on site. Most people decide to study for the exams themselves but for an extra charge individual ground school is available on request
Where do I go to take my test?
At Multiflight we have ‘in-house' examiners and can take you right from the beginning through to passing your Private Pilot's Licence.
What are the medical requirements?
You may start the course without holding a medical but before you fly solo you must pass a medical examination. For the JAA licence you must obtain a JAA Class 2 medical, which must be conducted by a CAA approved doctor. We have a medical examiner on the airfield or we can provide a list of other approved doctors available in the local area. For the NPPL your GP can provide you with a medical declaration certificate which is based on the Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) driving medical standards. The cost of an initial JAA Class 2 medical is around £150 and the NPPL medical declaration is set by your GP but typically between £20 and £50. If you require more information on what is covered in the JAA medical then have a look at the medical section of the CAA website. Please note colour blindness does not necessarily preclude you from holding a medical.
Can I get a job as a pilot when I have my PPL?
No, the holder of a PPL is entitled to fly an aeroplane for his/her own private use with family/friends. In order for you to work as a pilot and receive revenue for your services you must become a commercial pilot or instructor.
How long is a licence valid for?
A PPL is valid for 5 years provided the holder maintains a current medical and flies a minimum of 12 hours every 24 months (of which 12 hours must be in the second 12 month period and one of those hours must be with an instructor) and completed 12 take off and landings.
What type of aircraft will I be learning on?
Multiflight has a varied fleet to allow for maximum flexibility for its members. The current fleet stands at 4 Robin HR200s, 2 Cessna C152s, 1 Cessna C172, 2 Piper PA28s and 3 BE76 Duchess for multi-engine and commercial training. Most PPL training takes place on the 2 seat Robins but if you are above average size then you will have to undertake training in either the PA28 or C172 4 seat aircraft which are roomier.
If I learn on the Robin and wish to fly a different sort of aeroplane after I pass, what must I do?
You must do a check flight with one of our instructors onto each particular type you require to fly.
When I have my licence do I have to buy an aeroplane?
You can self-fly hire one of our aircraft for your own use when you have your licence.
Where can I take an aeroplane and can I land it anywhere?
You can take the aeroplane almost anywhere you wish and land at any civil airfield subject to its terms and conditions. (You will be taught the rules on the course).
Your price list quotes by the hour, what does this mean?
You only pay for the hours you fly (airborne plus 10minutes for taxiing); if you hire an aeroplane for the day you will only pay for the time it flies, subject to a minimum of 3 hours on week days, 5 hours at the weekend.
How do I have to pay for the course?
You can either pay each time after you have flown or pay an upfront bulk payment for a discount.
Is an aeroplane safe?
Yes, air travel generally is statistically far safer than road travel. In the hands of a sensible and well-trained pilot, the aeroplane is an excellent form of transport, which can be safely landed in the rare event of an engine failure. Many people think that if the engine fails in an aeroplane the situation is dire, this is not the case. During your course your instructor will demonstrate and subsequently teach you how to land the aeroplane safely without the engine running.
Can anybody fly an aeroplane?
Aeroplane flying is a skill that most people can achieve to a satisfactory level after sufficient practice. There will always be certain people who find controlling an aeroplane a little too difficult but generally 99% of people who start the course do complete it to a safe standard.
What prior knowledge of the aeroplane, navigation, air law etc do I need?
None as long as you are willing to learn and have a good degree of common sense we will teach you all you need to know.
Why should I learn to fly an aeroplane with Multiflight?
We have been operating for a number of years and are number one in the north for aeroplane pilot training and charter. We are not too large to ignore the individual needs of our students but experienced enough to provide a first class package to suit each person's own particular requirements.
Do I need an aeroplane licence or any previous experience?
No, you need no previous experience before starting your helicopter course, however if you hold a current fixed wing licence you can obtain a concession on the maximum 45 hour requirement, which is 10% of pilot in command hours up to a maximum of 6 hours.
Will I automatically get my licence after 45 hours flying training?
No, 45 hours is the minimum requirement as laid down by the Civil Aviation Authority for a person to hold a Private Pilot's Licence. It can sometimes take people a few more hours to meet the standard required by your examiner. It is not in the interests of safety for a flying school to guarantee a student a pass in a certain amount of hours. At Multiflight we treat safety with paramount importance and therefore our students will only take a test when their flying is up to a suitably high standard.
How long does the course take?
There is no set period over which you must do the course as long as you complete it therefore we can tailor a course from a full time (3-4 days a week) up to spreading it over 2-4 years if you so desire. However, please bear in mind people tend to suffer from lack of continuity if they try to spread the course over a long period.
How old do I have to be?
The minimum age requirement for a holder of a Private Pilot's Licence Helicopter PPL(H) is 17, however if someone younger than 17 wishes to start and learn, this is no problem but he/she would not be able to fly solo until their 16th birthday.
Do I automatically get a licence when I have completed the course?
No, just as when you learn to drive you will take a test at the end of the course.
Where do I go to take my test?
At Multiflight we have ‘in-house' examiners and can take you right from scratch through to passing your Private Pilots Licence.
What are the medical requirements?
You may start the course without holding a medical but before you fly solo you must pass a CAA Class 2 medical which must be conducted by a CAA approved doctor. We have a list of the approved doctors and can steer you towards the nearest. The medical is not as stringent as many insurance check-ups but pays close attention to blood pressure, hearing, eyesight etc.
Please note colour blindness does not necessarily preclude you from holding a medical.
Can I get a job when I have my PPL (H)?
The holder of a Private Pilot's Licence (H) is entitled to fly a helicopter for their own private use, for family and friends or own business trips. In order for you to work as a pilot and receive revenue for services you must become a commercial pilot or instructor.
How long is a licence valid for?
A PPL (H) is valid for 5 years provided the holder maintains a current medical and flies a minimum of 2 hours as pilot within the validity period of the rating.
If I learn on the R22 and wish to fly a different sort of helicopter what must I do?
You must do a five-hour conversion onto each particular type you require to add to your licence having initially passed the flight test.
When I have my licence do I have to buy a helicopter?
No you can self-fly hire one of our aircraft for your own use when you have your licence. This is at a lesser rate as you are not paying for an instructor to fly with you.
Where can I take a helicopter and can I land it anywhere?
You can take the helicopter almost anywhere you wish and you can land at any civil airfield subject to its terms and conditions. More importantly you can land on anybody's field or private site such as an hotel, restaurant, golf course and private property provided you have the owners permission, and you do not violate any Air Traffic Rules whilst doing so (you will be taught the rules on the course).
Our experienced staff will be pleased to assist with site selection and the relevant permissions.
Your price list quotes by the hour, what does this mean?
You only pay for the hours you fly, if you hire a helicopter for the day you will only pay for the time it flies, subject to a minimum of 1 hour. When you are learning you will spend a considerable amount of time on the ground being briefed by your instructor, this time is not chargeable.
Is a helicopter safe?
Yes, air travel generally is statically far safer than road travel. In the hands of a sensible and well-trained pilot, the helicopter is an excellent form of transport, which can be safely landed in the rare event of an engine failure. It is not true to say that the helicopter will fall from the sky in the event of an engine failure. In reality the aircraft will be put into an auto-rotative state. During the course your instructor will demonstrate and subsequently teach you how to land the helicopter safely without the engine running.
